Its that time of year again and I decided I needed another project. I stumbled across this clean 86 s10 on craigslist and had to have it. I have a few goals for the project: it needs to be a fun daily driver, have a/c and heat, as stock looking as possible(keeping the column shift and factory gauges), budget build (want under 2K total investment), and id like to get 25 mpg. The previous owner was beginning to swap a 4.3/700r4 so i had to put a stop to that I picked up a complete junkyard 4.8L/4L60e for the swap. After some internet searching i found that a 4.3L a/c bracket, with some cutting, will bolt to the passenger head on an ls motor and line right up with the truck accessories. Here is a link to that if anyone cares to know more: www.maliburacing.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=79059Here is a shot of it bolted up and a fresh coat of paint on all the truck accessories To order to avoid buying and expensive oil pan, the factory truck oil pan is going on a diet Pickup tube cut and tacked back together Frame notching is also required for the oil pan Next steps are to get the oil pan, pickup tube and frame welded back together. Also the bed will be removed to install a 255 intank pump and undercoat everything in sight. Thanks for looking Tyler

Nice! I love the older square-body S-10s. Yours looks VERY clean and straight...especially for the year. Keep us posted on this as you go.

Hey Tyler, I seen this over on s10forum, looks like a good start! These are a lot of fun to build. I went carbed tho but only bc I got a good deal on the msd box and intake. I might swap over to fuel injection eventually tho. If you have any questions let me know.

Looking Good! Should make for a good daily. What are you planning for the rear to help you get those mpg's? 2.73's? Cant remember if you told me whether your sticking with the 4L60 or not....

The 4l60e is staying and I may have to swap to some 2.73s to hit my mpg goal. Once this thing is ready to start ill be hitting you up for your hp tuners again

Im a bit overdue for an update because the pics are piling up. I am currently waiting for a friend to weld up the oil pan so in the meantime i attacked the rear of the truck and finished welding up the crossmember. I welded a piece of pipe in the crossmember for a bit of extra strength before it was boxed in. On a side note the pipe was the last thing i welded with my flux core wire mig because i finally got a tank of gas The finished frame Next the bed came off. Everything underneath was dirty but very rust free besides some surface rust. Coated the under side of the bed to keep it rust free since the truck will most likely see some salt. Fuel pump and corvette filter/reg was next Got the tank all cleaned up and began undercoating For whatever reason the rear end had no brakes So instead of getting brakes i just picked up a whole rear end for $20 Everything back in place with a new fuel pump, shocks, rear end with brakes, 4" drop blocks, and full undercoat. Next up is to get the pan back and start fitting everything up for the engine/ trans

Your zr1 wheels will fit with wheels spacers. That's what I have on mine right now. I think I have 2 inch ones on. I would have to double check tho.

More progress on the truck, it is now lowered all the way around and back on the ground. The front suspension got torn all apart in order to install the 2" drop spindles. Also cut one coil off of both front springs to get the extra lowering to hopefully match the rear. Everything back together with the 2" drop spindles, cut springs, new ball joints, shocks, sway bar bushings, brake line to fit frame notch and a fresh coat of paint of all the suspension components. I borrowed a cherry picker from dueces and was able to get the bed back on as well as the engine/ trans back in place. I went ahead and put the engine back in without the oil pan because otherwise i would be out of work until the pan was finished. I put the exhaust manifolds back on to check fitment and plan for further modification and routing. The manifolds being used are from a stock 98-99 f-body (the 98-99 f-body manifold are made of stainless sheet steel, making them easy to modify and weld). The drivers side clears nicely but i may make a small ding in one primary just to give some extra clearance for the steering shaft. The passenger side had to be notched out to clear the a-arm and requires a bit more clearancing. I will be continuing work on the exhaust and after that the core support and radiator can be test fitted. Most likely the radiator will need to be set back inside of the core support because i have the motor all the way forward in the motor mount slots to clear the column shifter linkage. Time will tell Thanks for looking, Tyler

Its been pretty slow going the past month with the holidays and taking a winter class at school but here are a few pics of whats going on currently Working on getting the harness put together right now, which has left my basement work bench in ruins The harness i got from the junk yard was cut completely off where it goes to the computer and fuse box so to try and stay with the budget theme, I went to the junk yard and cut some computer connectors off of a buick and have spliced them back into this truck harness. I still need to run all the powers and grounds as well as wire in the fuse and relay boxes, so still a good amount of work to be done there. I also went to the junk yard and picked up a few comfort items. a/c condensor, lines, drier, cruise control unit, and i radiator (since the truck came with a 4cylinder radiator, even though it had a 4.3 in it ). Just a pic of the a/c lines hooked up. They are a tight fit with the compressor sitting much farther forward than in a 4.3 truck. So i had to tweak them a few places that im not reall comfortable with but i think it should still work. I also picked up the fan shroud for the junkyard since the truck didnt come with one. Pretty much had to hack the entire shroud off of it and use it only because it doubles as the raditor mount. So with everything in place i can just fit my finger between the raditor and water pump pulley. So after all that i realized with the high mount a/c from the 4.3 and the alternator on the other side, I kind of F***ed myself with any possible escape route for the air intake tube. Im open to any ideas, as currently im considering trying to fit one of those rectangle filters right on the throttle body. The only other option i can see is to set the raditor into the core support and somehow move the condensor to the outside front of the core support which would require a lot of custom work that sounds like a PITA. But that route would also allow me to mount the fans on the back side of the raditor as opposed to using pushers. Let me know if you guys have any ideas here Finally i just snapped a pic of the truck on the ground with the fender set on it to get a feel for how it sits.

Looks awesome, but I think you will be miles ahead sinking that radiator in the support and getting the fans on the correct pulling side, especially if you want the a/c to work well. Bunch of work but it should open up just enough room to sneak in an air intake pipe. Might even be able to run the intake pipe straight down between the fans and terminate with a filter down low.

Thanks for the response randy. I did more digging last night and concluded the same thing. It looks like guys use a mid-late 80s corvette radiator to set them back. So ill probably be giving that a shot. And it does looks like I will have enough room to sneak a 3.5 or 4" pipe in front of the alternator to the pass front corner
