Has anyone around here installed longtubes on their DOHC 4.6L V8? It looks like a big fat pain in my ass.

I have done them on a two valve. I would do them....

Well I think I can do it myself since I don't want to be throwing money around for people to do it. I was just curious as to how much trouble it really is.

The mid lenths i did on the two valve were not too bad but i had access to a lift

I think I would have access to a lift as well. We'll see. They're not really very expensive so it's almost like a "why not" mod more than anything.

I think your best bet would be to get it on some jack stands to get the car in the air. But leave it close enough to the ground to loosen the Motor Mounts to lift the engine up to gain access to header bolts

Yeah that's what I read on one of the manufacturer's websites. They also mentioned removing the starter and steering shaft to allow header placement. I'll have to think it over. I need to read up some more on what people are actually gaining with longtubes before buying them.
I think I'm going to stay focused on getting the suspension work done first. I already have enough power to the point where a little suspension work and some good tires would really help out.

Has anyone around here installed longtubes on their DOHC 4.6L V8? It looks like a big fat pain in my ass. The easiest way to do it is to have a motor support bar that goes accross the top of the engine bay instead of a engine hoist (cherry picker etc..) and then drop the K-member and it makes it go MUCH easier. You can get the engine bay hoist i am talking about for $50 and it is a LIFE SAFER!!! It works great. If you go this route expect to spend AT LEAST around 6-9 hours for your first time. I've done a few and could probably tackle it in around 4-6 hours assuming everything goes well (which in case you haven't already found out NEVER happens) If you don't drop the K-member you'd better have some "god like" patience and set aside the better part of 2 days (i'd say around 12 hours without dropping the K although i've never done it this way this is the normal concensus)

Yeah that seems like it would make sense. I'm going to finish up with the suspension and what not first and get the new wheels/tires on. I'm interested in seeing how it does after all of that.

There are more issues with them than just getting them in there. There are a lot of issues with rubbing and ground scraping on lowered cars.
It's more trouble than it's worth if you ask me.

That's only with certain designs, I know that MAC's do not have a problem with ground clearance and BBK's (although there junk IMHO) Bassani's are good also but pricey. If you want to do it just get a set of MAC ceramics and call it a day. IMHO any car is going to benefit from a set of longtubes in the top end but the more power you make the more benefical they are.

How does he know BBKs are junk for that matter? Must have read it off the internet somewhere rather than talk to real people that own them.

My bbk headers are annoying, the number 1 primary is way too close to the head, and it routes over the other primaries to avoid the steering shaft, making it near impossible to get any of the header bolts started without playing operation with a magnetic stick... but their f-body headers, idk how the 4.6L Ford headers look..

Funny Ryan my BBK headers have been on my car for years and have no rust on them. The BBK shorties we pulled off the silver car had no rust on them either. Nick's BBK shorties had no rust on them when he switched and neither did my BBK equal length shorties that I originally had. Ben's Mac long tubes with the HTS coating didn't rust either even after 3 owners and 2 years of sitting.
If you want a quality header then Kooks, Accufab or QTP are your best choices.\
Spuds you have an LT1 all headers are painful on those cars.

Spuds you have an LT1 all headers are painful on those cars. I concur! As far as the topic at hand; I've had BBK, Hooker, and MAC longtubes on the cars I've owned. The Hookers were fine, but they did rust a little. The MACs looked the worst, but they were also the oldest so I can't blame them for that. I was blessed to have friends put the BBKs on, which still looked really nice the last time I saw them both the surface of them and their fit. I also had a Stainless Works ORY pipe and while it was affordable, it was the worst fit I'd ever seen.

No, I think you know who I am talking about. But I am not interested in argueing another point with somebody else in this thread. PM me if you feel like you have been unjustly libeled.

Well you said "people" and not "person", anyone who knows me knows I am someone that is a good person and on the up and up. We can continue this in PM if there is anything specific concerning me we need to discuss.
