Hey everybody. I'm building a 1968 firebird that's going to be powered by an ls1. I'm not sure if anybody has an experience with this swap, but I would love an input or advise to help make the project go more smoothly!

nope, it's in my house in my garage, but I'm moving it out to my shop in Davenport here in a couple of days to have some more room to work on it.

Yeah! Don't pontiacs come with LS1/2's now? Because the pontiac divison of GM can't make produce anything worth a crap...and why would they when their big brother makes suck an o'so sweet motor?

If he wants to build a Camaro he should just by a Camaro and leave the Firebird to someone that would give it the respect it deserves.

The problem is that the Corvette wasn't able to keep up with the Trans Ams in 1978 so Chevy put a stop to the Pontiac engines.
If he seriously wants the performance of todays engines he can get electronic fuel injection and crank triggered ignition systems for a 455 and have an extra 100 cubic inches on top of the LS1.

I guess the Vette won that arguement....and good luck putting that pontiac motor together for the same price he payed for the LS1. Man, I've never had this arguement with a fellow GM owner. I guess there's one in every crowd?
What respect does the firebird deserve? Have you ever noticed how similar the Firebird is to a Camaro? They're the same car dude. It's cool to love your car/manufacturer but saying any car doesn't deserve an LS1 is just crazy...you should put one in your firebird!

First off, my car was chopped to hell when I bought it. It will never ever be original again and it was nothing special from the factory so there is no reason to limit it by spending thousands of dollars from year one or rebuilding junkyard parts and still have it be slow and heavy. If you can find me an aluminum Pontiac motor that puts out 300+ horsepower bone stock, gets 20 miles to the gallon, is incredibly easy to upgrade, very reliable, and costs less than what I paid for my 50,000 mile LS1 I will gladly look into that swap. The bottom line is to get my car to the level of performance and reliability that I want the LS1 and the T56 are the best drive train combination for me. As for building a Camaro rather than a Firebird, I have always loved the lines of the first gen Firebirds, thus the reason I'm building a Firebird and not a Camaro.

I guess i'm still a little angry that GM would kill the Pontiac engine is favor of an engine that was putting out less horsepower in 1978. (Showing my age) I couldn't keep count of the corvette owners I sent home crying when I showed them my T/As tail lights. Guess they went crying to GM that the pontiacs were kicking there asses and they couldn't have that happening to there corvettes.
O.K. what does it cost for an LS1? I'll check on the cost of the EFI for the Pontiac.

I've got $1500 in my LS1. That includes all the accessories, wiring, sensors, the computer and a painless wiring harness to make things go more smoothly.
I'm not saying that some cars shouldn't be kept original, I'm all for any car that is restored, customized, or hot rodded as long as the owner is proud of it, but on a car that has been as hacked as mine was the benefits of bringing it back to stock are gone. So again, to get the performance and to make it into a fast, fun, and reliable daily driver the LS1 setup is the best option for me.
By the way streetbird, do you live off of crow creek?

Northwest Davenport in Ridgeview.
Hey i'm sorry about dissen your car.
And my 72 Firebird is anything but stock. 76 Formula hood 74 Formula engine 76 Grand Prix trans 70 Firebird interior Alum Slot wheels And the rearend is about to be from a 70 Trans Am.
And i'm not talking about putting your car back to stock, Maybe 400PLUS will let you know how much he has into his engine now. It's not stock but his Firebird runs 12's and he drives it to shows all the time.

12 second cars today are average!
Just so you know, 400 rear-wheel horse power out of an ls1 is nothing? You can acheive this with nothing more than a cam and intake. you add a 50-75 shot on top of that (which this motor will handle daily) and you laying down closer to 500 at the wheels for about a grand.
I'm not a pontiac guy and I wasn't born until 78, but wasn't chevy still producing the 454 in 78? I'm not gonna defend the vette because from the 70's until around the mid 90's the vette's were pooopy! Now, they have LSx motors and kick ass.

1974 was the last year for the 454 in the corvette. In 78 the corvette got a 180 horse 350 and you could get a 220 horse 400 in the Trans Am and Formulas. Not to hard to figure out what the outcome is there.
I agree that todays corvette is much faster than the ones from the 70's. Just try to imagine what today would have been like if Pontiac was still producing engines.
Oh yeah I've lived in Ridgeview since I was 2.

I don't think I was bashing the LS1 so much as his choice of car to put it into. I would much rather see a Pontiac in it when it came from the factory with a Pontiac in it. If I had the money I would offer to buy it from him and let him put his engine in a Camero. ;D

You can hardly call the LS1 a chevy motor. Everything at GM is considered cross branded at development. Really you should be thankful that Pontiac was allowed to use that engine.
