Hi - I have a 99 Ford Ranger 4.0, 4x4 and I have an intermittent 'chirp' sound from the engine. It sounds like a bad bearing (like on the idler pulley). The dealer says it comes from the belt and they spray it with some sort of belt lube. I'm not sure if this is the real problem. A friend has an 03 Ranger and he has the same issue. Any thoughts out there?

Belt lube? Don't every spray anything on your belts... You have to try and isolate the sound. Is it RPM or Vehicle speed dependent? What side of the motor is it come from? If you think its a pulley, take the belt off and spin, pull on and inspect them all. If you can't find anything that way, use the old timers trick with a long screw driver like a stethoscope with the truck running. Just watch out for the fan and don't wear any loose clothing.

ive replaced dozens of cam snychronizers on the ford engines. they like to make a chirping sound as you decribed. not sure if thats your issue but that might be a starting point
