So before the short block was replaced I started having issues with blue smoke out the exhaust. It would happen after a deceleration approaching a stop light, when you went to accelerate you would get a nice cloud. It also happens after the car sits for a short period of time and you start it up again. I've left it sit overnight and it doesn't seem to do it in the morning??? Under WOT there is only a puff of black smoke then nothing (that I am aware of).
The suggestions were rings or valve stem seals... due to me being an idiot I decided to replace the motor (the blue smoke, had a vibration caused by a cracked pressure plate and piston slap were my reasons for replacing it.).
I put in a new short block, had the heads done at Stealy (disassembled, valve job, new seals, cleaned, reassembled) and replaced nearly everything (upgraded some parts, replaced with factory spec on others).
16K and 10 months later the smoke is back. Ideas? Did a compression check and they were all 180-195 range. I have a catch can on the dirty side of the pcv... leak down would be next? Should I just suck it up and replace the valve seals and see what happens?

Well considering the heads were redone I would still think it is PCV related. Can you try running open elements in place of the PCV to see if you still get smoke?

Do I just need a filter and some block offs? I can give it a shot...
Interesting note... I don't have a check valve after the catch can..is it possibly sucking oil out of the catch can? Its pretty deep so I'm not sure how it would, just thinking out loud I guess.

Yes. You can the little mini K&N filters and put it on the tube that comes off the intake. Block all the PCV ports on the valve covers and such. This is just temporary though to see if that is indeed your problem. By all mean switch up the location of the check valve. I would just be mildly surprised if the seals in your heads were taking a dump right now. My experience is that they wear out with really high miles or they die right away when they are new from sitting on your bench too long with no oil.

I'll try to get that done at least to test asap... so far today no smoke... stupid thing.

Cars suck. No doubt.

Gah... warranty on the short block is up in a month and I have no idea if the rings are bad or not.. fuck I hate this car. The smoke is pretty frequent now (anytime it's idling and then given gas)... going to replace the valve seals and then just deal with it if it continues I guess.

I would replace the valve seals first. If that didn't fix it, I would send the block in to be checked out.

Isn't this common on LS1's? Mine smokes like a bloody tampon during acceleration although I need a catch can...

I'm not sure if it's common... I put 150k on the car before it started the first time... Replaced the shortblock/had heads redone and it's been good up until now (almost a year and a lot of miles). I don't see any blue during accelerating (just a puff of black).

Have you tried doing a leak down test?

No ... I really need to get my shit together... Left the house at 6am and just now got home... typical night and I wonder why I can't get something simple like that done.

Well that sucks... Looks like it might be an easy fix though. I found 3 of them like this... All exhaust.

Pulled the springs and tapped them all down. No smoke so far... Not sure why they came up?? I plan on replacing with the single peice ones pretty soon. I don't want to do that every year. Ugh.

Does anyone have access to a better spring compressor than the one autozone rents? I've seen some on ls1tech but I don't want to spend money and discover it doesn't work.

It's funny...the work I do myself ends up holding together (might have duct tape on it but it holds up)... the stuff I have other people do always seems to bring me pain.
