I would like to get a cam for my Trans am...but not sure what i should go with. Im not sure if there is anything done to the car so i would imagine that its just stock. Also i was wondering what you would need to do to install the cam to...like if you could do it in the car...or would have to drop the motor. Any suggestions would be helpfull thanks!

What kind of motor are we talking here? SBC, LT1, LS1? Stick, auto? What convertor if auto, what gears, what heads? Do you run a poweradder? What kind of driveability losses are you willing to accept? Lots of variables for cams.

its a Ls1 6 speed and i was thinking of just going with the ls6 set up...i dont know a whole lot about the ls1 and whats good to get for them...and whats not...just wondering if anyone had some suggestions on what would be some good ideas for this car to add HP. And ive heard that if you add a cam to a ls1 you can drop close to 400 hp with installing one

You're right, you can put down 400 hp with a cammed LS1, just as long as you don't cut corners and you make a good selection. Call speedinc or someone and ask what they suggest.

The G5x3 is a pretty big cam. There are many things you would need to consider before selecting a cam like that. You can make 400rwhp with something more mild.
You need to consider if your going to stay with stock gears or switch to something like 4.10's. You also need to consider what RPM your willing to rev to/shift at. Is this a mostly street car or do you want results at the track? What are your mod plans for the future?
You will need headers, catback, LS6 intake, UD pulley, and an airlid to make a valid attempt at 400 rwhp cam only. Unless you overcam the shit out of it and try to hit 400 just to be a dyno queen. If you dont want to get headers look at the CheatR cam (I think TSP or thunder racing) It's designed for stock manifolds.
I would definitely go bigger than the LS6 cam if your doing a swap.

I know you can swap a cam with the motor in the car. You have to remove the radiator but I'm pretty sure that's the method most speed shops use.
For the swap you'll need cam, springs, Ti retainers if you use dual springs, LS6 oil pump, double roller timing chain, hardened pushrods. You'll most likely need computer tuning as well. At least that's what the standard recommendations are.
The best thing you could do right now is research on LS1tech.

SpeedInc. usually has really well priced specials on cam installs. Check that out.
