My 5th gear just started to reject being used... Unless I bring the RPMs up as I am shifting 5th gear just grinds and spits the shifter out. I assume this is the begining signs of a dying synchro... anyone know?

I had a T56 in my Z28. It had a bad 3rd gear synchro which made it tough to shift into, but it never kicked out of gear once it was in. I've never heard anything about an issue with T56 5th gear. I thought I heard though that if a synchro is completely crapped out that it'll kick out of gear. I might be wrong though.

It could be a few things... You really won't know for sure until you take it apart. The "struts" that hold the syncros might have broken, or maybe one of the blocker rings got messed up. If you've ever had a t56 apart, you know there are way too many things going on.

Unless you put a hell of alot of money into them, there notchy, crappy shifting, grinding pieces of shit. Don't forget about the plastic sliders, which is also a possibility and KNOWN to always fail... not sure why, oh yeah there FUCKING PLASTIC

Hmm.. I don't want to rip the damn thing out and piss with it... I guess I have drivetrain warranty at Lujacks still...maybe I will clean up the car and take it over..anyone know how anal they are? I don't want a tiny peice of rubber on the fender to get my warranty dropped.

You may be left holding the bag at screwjacks since it's a manual. I'm not certain on that though. My fifth gear does pretty much the same thing, will NOT go in unless I'm shifting from fourth. Also wont go in all the time either, sometimes it almost goes in but then kinda vibrates and backs out. Mine was caused by a goof at the track. Went to hit third but it hung up a sec and slid into fifth just as my foot had came back up, grind. I'll have to sort it out this winter.

the fifth gear is actually pretty easey to get to. if you take your tranny out and stand it up so the tail shaft points up, 5th, 6th, and reverse are all in the first section to take apart. it could be a broken or worn fork pad or two, the fork sould not be bent cause it is steel, or maybe the sycros or slider rings worn. if you want to due the labor you could get it done fairly cheap also how many miles on it?

the forks are cast aluminum Nate... but yeah i think its the sliders. Parts really aren't that cheap but id look at the warranty aspect first.

could of swore it was steel cause the fist fork, the reverse fork, was aluminum. the second one down that sat on the 5th,6th assy was steel. could be aftermarket, it was rebuilt once before

Just send your 6 speed to Finish Line Performance... Its worth the extra money, you'll have a bad ass transmission in the end that can take some mean abuse.
