Any of you LS1/LS6 guys have any problems with the powdered rods? They're similar to the rods used in my 3.5.. I was just curious if they're plenty strong for 400-450 HP/7k+ RPM. here is a pic of the 3500 rod VS the older rods GM used... the old ones were forged steel, new ones are powdered steel. 2.25" journal and 5.9" long. thanks for any info... Dave

They are the weakest link in the LS1s relatively weak bottom end minus the crank of course.

LS1's are weaksauce? Take it back! 7K plus is the clincher not so much the HP level.I wouldn't use them,I would be afraid they wouldn't hold bearing crush, spin and spit out a rod like most LS1's.

My tranny has a max input RPM of 6200 and dosen't like to shift much above that. According to the figures of DD2K max HP is around 6500 as well... What about having them shotpeened? I looked into aftermarket ones, the 4.3 uses the same crank journal but i only found 5.7" length.. LS1/6's are too small journal and too long...

I'm not sure about shotpeening a powdered rod,I don't know if it helps like a on a forging.I'm not afraid of the stockers in my LS1,I shift @6400 and it makes 415/402 at the wheels. Its a balancing act,you have to comfortable about what you expect the motor to do and what you'll lose if it does break a rod.

...I wouldn't build a motor with stock rods if I had it apart. Period, end of story. Unless of course it was going to be under no more then stock conditions.

That's another issue.. this block was only made for 2 years and they're allready getting hard to find. It's been notched pretty good to clear the swing of the crank so a rod would probably make it's way through pretty easy... w/o the spray it should make just above 300 HP/280 TQ so i'm guessing it'll be safe if i just forget about the gas... I really can't justify the money for custom rods. I'm allready $2K into the project as it is.

I don't know what the journal size is on a big block chevy rod but i'm pretty sure the length is 5.9".

i checked the BBC ones, they're all over 6" I found lots of others that were around 5.9 but they were from 4cyl's and the journals were around 2" instead of 2.25.
